Washington D.C., August 12 (FrontPostPlus) – US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that US India trade talks have been slow, describing India as “a bit recalcitrant” in ongoing discussions. The remarks come as several major trade agreements remain unfinished, including deals with Switzerland and India.

Bessent, speaking to Fox Business Network’s Kudlow, expressed hope that the Trump administration could wrap up the pending trade negotiations by the end of October 2025. While he acknowledged progress with other partners, he pointed to India’s hesitancy as a factor delaying the conclusion of talks.

“That’s aspirational, but I think we are in a good position… we will have agreed on substantial terms with all the substantial countries,” Bessent said.

The Treasury Secretary’s comments highlight the challenges in securing a trade agreement with India, despite the growing strategic partnership between the two nations in defence, technology, and economic sectors. Trade experts suggest that differences over market access, tariffs, and digital trade policies are likely at the heart of the slowdown.

Bessent also mentioned that the talks with India form part of a broader push to secure comprehensive agreements with key global partners, aligning with the US administration’s goal to strengthen supply chains and reduce dependency on specific markets.

With both sides recognising the economic potential of a robust trade pact, analysts believe that political will and flexibility will be key to bridging the gaps before the October deadline.
