The Government of India has announced a major push to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence infrastructure under a new national supercomputing expansion plan. The initiative aims to establish advanced AI-ready data centres across key research institutions and technology hubs.

Officials said the move will support startups, academic researchers and public sector projects working on healthcare, agriculture, climate modelling and language technologies. The programme will provide subsidised access to high-performance computing resources, allowing Indian innovators to train large AI models domestically instead of relying on foreign cloud infrastructure.

Experts believe the initiative could significantly enhance India’s competitiveness in the global AI race while also improving data security and technological self-reliance.
