Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after the United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on sites described as linked to Iran’s senior leadership and military infrastructure. The attacks, confirmed by US President Donald Trump, were described as targeting “major strategic facilities” associated with Iran’s command structure and regional operations.
According to initial reports, the strikes focused on locations believed to be connected to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard command network and other high-level administrative compounds. Explosions were reported in and around Tehran, with state media acknowledging damage but providing limited details on casualties.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes across the region, with missiles and drones reportedly targeting US-linked facilities and Israeli interests. Air traffic in parts of the Middle East has been disrupted, with several international airlines suspending or rerouting flights due to safety concerns. Oil markets reacted nervously, reflecting worries about potential disruptions to supply routes through the Gulf.
World leaders have urged restraint, warning that a prolonged confrontation could destabilise the wider region. Diplomatic efforts are reportedly under way behind the scenes, though both sides have signalled readiness to respond to any further attacks.
