India condemns U.S. for slapping 25% tariff on Russian oil imports while sparing China with a 90-day grace period. MEA calls it unfair, unjustified, and hypocritical.

In a scathing response to the United States’ decision to impose a 25% additional tariff on India’s oil imports from Russia, the Government of India has called out the move as unjustified, discriminatory, and hypocritical.

While China, the largest purchaser of Russian oil, has been granted a 90-day exemption, India faces an immediate tariff hike — a decision that experts believe reveals Washington’s double standards and strategic fear of Beijing.

“Is the U.S. afraid of China? While the dragon gets a pass, India is penalized for acting in its national interest,” a senior Indian official remarked.

🇮🇳 India’s Official Statement: A Strong Stand for Sovereignty

“The United States has in recent days targeted India’s oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position… done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India.”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that India’s imports are guided by market logic and strategic needs, not political appeasement.

⚖️ U.S. Double Standards: Hypocrisy Exposed

The announcement has sparked outrage across Indian strategic circles. While Washington justifies its action as a stand against Russia, the grace period given to China — who continues to import in far greater volume — paints a different picture.

“This is not foreign policy. This is favoritism wrapped in fear,” said a Delhi-based economist.
“The U.S. knows it can’t afford to antagonize China, so it flexes against India instead.”

🔥 The Real Target: India’s Growing Global Influence?

India’s non-alignment in global energy politics, particularly during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, has long irked Western powers. This tariff, analysts say, is a veiled attempt to punish India’s independent stance and growing energy diplomacy.

Yet India remains firm.

“We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.” — MEA Statement

📊 US-India Trade War: The Bigger Picture

The move adds fuel to the already tense US-India trade war, which has seen flashpoints ranging from digital taxation to defense procurement. India’s strong condemnation signals it won’t bow to Western economic coercion.
