In a strong and unapologetic response, the Government of India has condemned recent remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused India of indirectly funding the Russia-Ukraine conflict through its energy imports from Moscow. Trump’s statement, posted on his Truth Social platform, has stirred diplomatic ripples, prompting India to call out what it describes as “blatant double standards” in the West’s foreign policy.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement rejecting the accusations as “unjustified and unreasonable,” noting that the same countries criticizing India are themselves deepening their own economic engagement with Russia, particularly in the energy sector.

“It is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,” the MEA asserted.

India emphasized that its oil imports are based on economic necessity—ensuring energy affordability and stability for its domestic population. The government reminded the international community that its imports from Russia began only after traditional supplies were diverted to Europe following the onset of the Ukraine conflict. These actions, India noted, were not only pragmatic but initially encouraged by the United States itself.

The MEA highlighted a glaring inconsistency: while India is criticized, European countries have continued to expand their trade with Russia across multiple sectors. In 2024, the European Union recorded over €67.5 billion in goods trade with Russia and €17.2 billion in services. More strikingly, European LNG imports from Russia hit a record 16.5 million tonnes—higher than any previous year.

Additionally, the West’s trade with Russia extends far beyond energy. Fertilizers, uranium for nuclear power, palladium for electric vehicles, and chemicals all continue to flow into the U.S. and EU from Russian suppliers.

“India, like any major economy, will continue to take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the official statement concluded.

New Delhi’s message is clear: accusations rooted in geopolitical bias will not derail India’s strategic autonomy. In a world of shifting alliances and power plays, India refuses to be lectured by those who do not practice what they preach.
